A hobby project

One of my hobbies is to crochet edges, and embroider, on pillowcases. My Grandmother crocheted edges on things. I have some Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck handkerchiefs from the 50s that she actually crocheted edges onto. So apparently I inherited a genetic need to perform this activity.

I enjoy the embroidery because it is the exact opposite of what I do at work all day. I get to choose the colors and stitches. No Request for Change form approved by 3 committees! No Move to Production Freeze/Control period! No submitting instructions/scripts for someone else to do the work! I implement whatever I feel like and if it doesn't work, just rip it out and do it over.

There is one similarity -- figuring out where to go next with the thread is sort of like a 'shortest path' problem -- but that's the fun part of computer science.

The pillowcase in the picture is all finished -- now, to repeat it on the other one of the pair. It will probably take about two months. Oh wait -- no need for planning, scheduling or project status reports. It will get done whenever I feel like getting it done. Ah, the wonderful sense of control and power.

Beautiful work, Nina. Do you use them after they're done?

I still have some doilies that came from Grandma. I only use the flat ones nowadays...do you want me to send some ruffles? They need starching and ironing to make them stand up straight. That's why they're in the drawer!

Is that edging called tatting? I tried to learn how to do that, but my fingers got twisted up.

Ok Mary that will be my very next project -- maybe if we get a chance we can go to the fabric store in Dec.

To chamapa: I have a lot of them and I do use them in a rotation so that a couple times a year they get washed & ironed. Otherwise they get dingy. I keep them in acid-free tissue.

The edging it not tatting, it is crochet. Tatting is a lot harder. The thread is smaller. These pillowcases are from the 40s-50s (I get them on eBay) and they have little manufactured holes along the edge that you can crochet right into.

About the doilies, no, keep what you have. But have I got 'your' Disney handkerchief? Do you want one?

I need a hobby, too...all that power and control stuff sounds good. I'm thinking knitting. My housemate is learning. Thoughts?

You might have "my" Mickey Mouse handkerchief, Nina, but it sounds like it's in good hands. Take good care of it!
